Vamana (Emesis)

It is a medicated therapy which removes Kapha toxins collected in the body and the respiratory tract.

Procedure of Vamana :

To Start with this Panchakarma Treatment the client is asked to drink stomach full of milk, sugarcane juice or mutton Soup. Usually about 2 litters of liquid is required to fill the stomach. Total amount of liquid given to the client should be measured and is needed later on for the assessment of amount of vomiting. After filling the stomach with liquids, it is time for the administration of emetic medicine. About 10 gms of madanaphala(Randia Spinosa) combination is mixed with 25ml of honey. This is mixed well and is made into a paste. This thick paste is rolled into 2 to 3 pills. Client is asked to take these pills. The therapist should observe the client for appearance of perspiration in the forehead restlessness, salvation in the mouth, discomfort in the abdomen and nausea. During this period the therapist should encourage the client by slowly moring his palms on the clients back, sides and abdomen. As the patient starts developing the nausea he is asked to slightly bend forward and vomit into the bowl placed on the stool. If the client does not start to vomit is about 48 minutes of administering the emetics vomiting should be induced by any one of the following. Herbal paste of Sarshapa(Brassica Campestris), amalaki (Emblica Officinalis) and Pippali in a single dose. Decoction of Yashtimadhu(glycyrrhiza glabra) given frequently. Lukewarm salt solution in plenty. By the administration of anyone of the above said medicines vomiting begins. If this also fails vomiting is mechanically induced by irritating pharynx. This may be achieved by touching the pharynx with stalk of lotus, finger or a rubber catheter.

How Does Vamana Work :

Snehana(unction) and Swedana(sudation) are adopted to loosen and mobilise the toxins, in an effort to eliminate toxins in the body. The special medicated drink taken in the morning will pull these loosened toxins out of the body through Vamanam, after being brought to Gastro-Intestinal Tract.

Vamanam isn’t Advisable When :

  • Pregnant
  • dehydrated or nauseated.
  • Suffering from Heart Diseases.
  • Ascites
  • Piles
  • Suffering from Giddiness.
  • Bleeding in upper part of the body.
